Bee City USA: Building a Better Future for Pollinators in Truckee with TINS
Bee City USA: Building a Better Future for Pollinators
In 2026, the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science (TINS) helped lead Truckee’s effort to become an official Bee City USA community. What began with local students advocating for pollinators has grown into a community-wide effort involving TINS, the Town of Truckee, Tahoe Expedition Academy, TTUSD, UC Davis, Slow Food, and other community partners.
As the lead nonprofit for Truckee’s Bee City USA program, TINS is helping bring together community members, educators, scientists, and local organizations to better understand and support our native pollinators. We are working to create opportunities for pollinator education, habitat restoration, research, community science, and hands-on learning in our schools.

Pollinator habitat: Support native plantings, pollinator gardens, and habitat projects throughout our community.
Community engagement: Create events and volunteer opportunities that connect people with pollinators and give our community tangible ways to support them.
Research and community science: Build our understanding of Truckee’s native bee species, where they occur, and how they use local habitat.
Local resources: Develop native plant lists, pollinator guides, educational materials, and other resources for residents, gardeners, and schools.
Support Bee City
Your donation can help Truckee give back to the pollinators that make our ecosystems possible. Whether you’re interested in supporting a school program, planting pollinator habitat, contributing to community science, or helping us build the broader Bee City initiative, your support can help turn this community commitment into action.
Want to help? Donate to TINS or reach out to learn about partnership and funding opportunities. Together, we can make Truckee a place where native pollinators have the habitat, resources, and community support they need to thrive.
